
Inspector Road Openings – Division of Operations, Department of Public Works
Organizational Overview:
The Operations Division provides safe passage of residents and visitors on County roadways through various infrastructure improvements to improve the safety and the movement of traffic through county roadways. The Operations Division schedules the inspection, maintenance and repair of approximately 439 miles of county roads for the safety of the residents of Bergen County in a cost-effective manner. Crews respond to all emergency issues that occur on County roads 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Job Description:
This employment opportunity is to serve as Inspector Road Openings. Under direction, inspects road openings for compliance with plans, specifications, and regulations; does other related duties as required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Makes periodic inspections of road openings, both planned and emergency, for underground utility construction and connections, curb cutting, and/or construction for driveway entrances.
- Patrols roadways to investigate road openings for permits; when made, how they are back-filled, and how they are left safety-wise for the traveling public.
- Investigates and reports on complaints concerning other roadway conditions in addition to permit work. Patrolling roadways in search of potholes, sunken utility patches, signs down or damaged, catch basins collapses, clogged drains, road striping concerns, and other anomalies that need to be addressed.
- Meets in the field with contractors or representatives, residents, developers, or utility company workers in advance of any anticipated new construction and informs them as to the jurisdiction requirements.
- May perform responsible clerical work involved in the issuance of road opening permits which is exemplified by these tasks.
- Checks permit applications for completeness and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Establishes and maintains records and files.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the County or related units.

Schedule:
- Full time (40 hours/week).
- Evening and Weekends as needed
- Occasional Overtime and On Call
- Employees will be required to work overtime and during non-scheduled periods when the necessities of the County of Bergen demands such work, including available to work during snowstorms, including snow plowing and salting events.
Education Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent
Other Requirements:
- Appointees must possess a valid New Jersey Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) “B” minimum with a Tanker Endorsement
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Word, Outlook and Excel programs.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Salary: $51,000 / per annum
