Social Service Technician – Human Services – Division of Veterans Services

Organizational Overview:

The Bergen County Division of Veterans Services was established in 1977 to provide resident veterans and their dependents with information and assistance in obtaining earned entitlements from federal, state, and local governments, as well as any that are available from the private sector. Through newsletter and direct client contact, the division provides Bergen’s veterans organizations and their auxiliaries and individual residents with up-to-date benefit information.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity will be to serve as a Social Service Technician for the Division of Veterans Services. Under the close supervision of a Social Work Supervisor or other supervisor, performs paraprofessional work involving the operation of a service program requiring specialized skills and program knowledge; gathers required social information about clients; assesses cases; implements preventive, rehabilitative and/or supportive treatment programs; performs other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:              

  • Performs supportive social services such as complete intakes from Veterans, surviving spouses, and their children.
  • Help Veterans and families make use of public welfare and community agency services
  • Makes home visits to obtain information about clients, which helps to determine and plan services.
  • Manage the Veterans database tracker.
  • Attend outreach events.
  • Work hand-in-hand with other team members to address Veteran and family needs.
  • Assists with projects and surveys within the agency and gathers other routine data as needed.
  • Maintains adequate records and prepares brief reports and recommendations.

Schedule:    Per Diem – minimum 20 hours a week; maximum 29 hours a week  

Education and Experience Requirements:   

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Science or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in a Veterans and Social Service, health or community agency involving gathering social information from clients, identifying their needs, providing referrals for needed services, or planning and carrying out treatment plans for clients.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Word, Outlook and Excel programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
