
Truck Driver Heavy/Road Repairer 1 – Division of Operations, Department of Public Works
Organizational Overview:
The Operations Division provides safe passage of residents and visitors on County roadways through various infrastructure improvements to improve the safety and the movement of traffic through county roadways. The Operations Division schedules the inspection, maintenance and repair of approximately 439 miles of county roads for the safety of the residents of Bergen County in a cost-effective manner. Crews respond to all emergency issues that occur on County roads 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Job Description:
This employment opportunity is to serve as a Truck Driver Heavy/Road Repairer 1. Under direction, drives a truck with a tandem/dual rear axles to transport materials, equipment or people; Performs varied types of work involved in the maintenance, repair, resurfacing, construction of roads within a jurisdiction, assists in the installation, maintenance of traffic lines and traffic signs; Maintains grounds; Does related work.
Job Responsibilities:
- Drives trucks with tandem/dual rear axles to pick up, load truck, and deliver materials
- Receives written and/or oral assignments and drives trucks of varied types including trucks used for road maintenance and construction work and road oiling, snow plowing, and ice control work.
- Assists with the repair and installation of snowplows and spreaders.
- Supplies trucks with gas, oil, and water; keeps garage clean and in order; keeps records receipts, deliveries, fuel consumption, and mileage traveled.
- Checks, cleans, greases, washes, and performs the required adjustments to trucks and other auxiliary equipment.
- Collects, loads, and unloads, with and without assistance, various types of equipment, furniture, laundry, food products, coal, ashes, garbage, trash and delivers same by truck to specified destinations.
- Operates snow removal equipment to keep roads clear.
- Must inspect truck prior to operating for proper amounts of fuel, oil, water, and to see that tires are inflated and that lights and brakes work properly.
- May make minor emergency repairs to trucks such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, fuses, and tire chains.
- When not engaged in driving a truck or other equipment, may perform other work such as road and landscape construction, building maintenance and repair work, grounds keeping, laboring, or other unskilled work.
- Digs trenches and does manual grading.
- Shovels gravel and sand.
- Assists in the repair of potholes.
- Aids in the placing of forms used in concrete work.
- Spreads and levels dirt, asphalt, and other material on roadways
- Perform manual labor under all weather conditions
Schedule:
Full time (40 hours/week).
Applicants must be able and willing to work all snowstorms, emergencies and other “on call” events.
Education Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent
Other Requirements:
- One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with tandem/dual rear axles and auxiliary equipment such as snow plow, salt spreader, power take-off, winch, and lift body.
- One (1) year of experience in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of roads or streets which may include work involving the installation and maintenance of traffic lines and signs, or one (1) year of experience as a laborer in a public works department.
- Appointees must possess a valid New Jersey Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A or B
- Possess a Tanker Endorsement for CDL or procure endorsement within 90 days of employment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Salary: $40,000 – 59,500 / per annum
