COUNTY OF BERGEN PREPARING AHEAD OF ANTICIPATED WEEKEND WINTER STORM

County Executive Jim Tedesco & DPW Director Brian Niland will be available to speak with media about storm preparations

PARAMUS, NJ – The County of Bergen’s Office of Emergency Management and Snow Operations in the Department of Public Works are monitoring the anticipated winter storm expected to impact Northern New Jersey from Saturday evening through Monday morning, with County departments mobilizing personnel, equipment, and resources to ensure roads, parks, and facilities remain safe and passable throughout the event.

The National Weather Service forecasts a 60 percent chance of precipitation Saturday night, increasing to 90 percent throughout Sunday, with lingering impacts into Monday morning. Total snow accumulation is expected to average 6-10 inches around the county with higher amounts locally possible. The heaviest snowfall will be from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening. Snowfall rates could be between 1-2 inches per hour, with reduced visibility.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco and Department of Public Works Director Brian Niland will be available on Saturday, January 24at the Bergen County Department of Public Works Annex to discuss the County’s snow-removal and storm-response preparations ahead of the anticipated winter storm expected to impact Northern New Jersey from Saturday evening to Monday morning. They will also be available to update the media on Sunday and Monday to discuss the ongoing countywide snow response.

Bergen County maintains a fleet of more than 100 trucks equipped for salting and plowing, responsible for maintaining over 120 miles of County roadways as well as County parks and facilities. During snow events, the County typically deploys between 100 and 150 employees operating a 24-hour, in-house response supported by staff from the Departments of Public Works, Parks, and Public Safety. Depending on storm conditions, crews may operate on 12-hour shifts.

The County performs snow removal operations for seven contracted municipalities—Carlstadt, Lodi, Hackensack, Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, and Skyline Drive in Oakland—and plows County roadways in Fort Lee and Cliffside Park, where local DPWs handle salting. For municipalities not directly plowed by the County, Bergen County DPW supplies salt and brine for County roads.

County officials will continue to monitor weather conditions closely and adjust operations as needed to respond to changing conditions. For continued updates, follow Bergen County, NJ, County Executive Jim Tedesco, and Bergen County OEM on social media.
