BERGEN COUNTY REVOLUTIONARY WAR ROUNDTABLE SERIES TO DIVE INTO NAVAL WARFARE FOCUSED ON THE HUDSON RIVER
A Story of the Earliest Efforts to Defend the Hudson River Valley from British Control of the River.
Hackensack, NJ – Bergen250, the Bergen County Division of Cultural & Historic Affairs, and the County of Bergen along with invite the public and media to attend the second of the Spring 2026 American Revolutionary War Roundtable Series on Wednesday, February 11 at 7:00 PM at the Bergen County Administration Building’s Learning Center, 4th Floor, 1 Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack.
In July 1776, General Washington ordered his forces to construct Fort Washington in New York. Soon after he directed that Fort Constitution (named Fort Lee in October) be built on the high cliffs across the River in New Jersey. The efforts resulted in sitting the heaviest guns in the continental army arsenal, placing scientifically developed obstacles, assigning a number of gun boats and poorly trained, inexperienced soldiers together as artillerymen to begin the fight. During July through November, there were at least six engagements with the Royal Navy on the Hudson from both sides. In addition, there were two nearby attempts from the New York side to use fireships and a highly innovative, submersible technology to try to sink ships of the Royal Navy.
Much of these determined efforts were seriously flawed and led to the disastrous loss of Fort Washington, and what we know as the Long Retreat to Victory in November and December 1776.
Speaker Kevin Tremble owns and operates a small business in Bergen County and has been deeply involved in the local history scene for decades. In addition to his work as a transportation planner with the Tri-State Regional Planning Commission, as a transportation planner and engineer with the National Park Service, and Assistant Manager for Design on the Trans-Hudson Ferry project for the NY/NJ Port Authority, Mr. Tremble has previously served in leadership roles on the Palisades Interstate Park’s Citizen’s Advisory Council, the Washington Association of New Jersey, Crossroads of the American Revolution NHA Association, and the Bergen County Historic Sites Advisory Board. Currently, he serves as a member of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission and the New Jersey Historical Commission.
