New Addition to County Memorial Will Honor Bergen County Residents Lost in the Years Since to 9/11-Related Illnesses
LEONIA, N.J. – Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco, III and the Bergen County Board of Commissioners will host Bergen County’s Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony today, Friday, September 11 at 3:30 p.m., at the Bergen County 9/11 Monument in Overpeck County Park.
This year’s ceremony, marking 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, will include the official rededication of the County’s 9/11 Memorial Monument and the unveiling of a significant new addition featuring two steel beams from the World Trade Center.
The Bergen County 9/11 Monument has long stood in memory of the 147 Bergen County residents who were killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001. The new addition will expand that tribute by specifically recognizing Bergen County residents who survived that day and its immediate aftermath, but later lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses and chronic disease.
On Thursday, first responders from across Bergen County escorted the two pieces of World Trade Center steel to Overpeck County Park, where they were placed at the memorial ahead of today’s ceremony.
Twenty-five years after September 11, the expanded memorial will reflect the full and continuing toll the attacks have taken on Bergen County — preserving the memory of those killed that day while ensuring that those whose lives were ultimately claimed by the lasting effects of September 11 are remembered alongside them.
Members of the public and media are invited to attend.
