The Bergen County Division of Weights and Measures mission is to safeguard the interest of the public in all matters concerning commercial transactions of the commodities sold to consumers and businesses, which involve the determination of net quantities, pricing, fair competition, and equity in the marketplace.
Job Description:
This employment opportunity will be to serve as the Assistant Superintendent of Weights and Measures. Under direction, inspects and tests weighing and measuring devices for compliance with state law, regulations, and standards; may take the lead over lower-level inspectors; does related work as required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Inspects and tests weighing and measuring devices; uses scales, volumetric instruments, and other standard methods to determine accuracy of equipment; seals approved equipment.
- Explains and interprets laws and regulations governing weights and measures to users of measuring devices, complainants, and other concerned individuals.
- Assists in office work including reviewing licenses, recording and filing reports on completed inspections, inspecting weighmasters’ applications, compiling data for reports, and maintaining records.
- Inspects and tests equipment used to pack commodities in manufacturing plants and to reweigh, remeasure, and recount packaged commodities being shipped, stored in a warehouse and/or otherwise being delivered, sold, or presented for sale.
- Inspects, tests, and calibrates gasoline dispensers, bulk rack and truck meters including the entire metering system (wholesale and retail) at refineries and distribution terminals, liquid petroleum (LPG) meters (liquid or vapor), road oil distributor vehicles, tank truck compartments, large capacity weighing systems (mechanical and electronic) odometers on rental vehicles, speedometers of certain law enforcement vehicles, slow-flow retail petroleum meters, linear devices (including steel surveying and engineering tapes) farm milk holding tanks, and various types of auxiliaries and printout devices.
- Operates volumetric meter provers, pharmaceutical and other specialized testing equipment; conducts inspections and tests of volumetric measuring devices, pharmacy’s weights and measures, and other devices.
- Assists in the calibration and verification of official and industrial standards for weights and measures and in the testing and inspection of laboratory and scientific weighing and measuring devices.
- Inspects and tests complex automated electronic weighing and measuring systems at the wholesale and retail level such as the universal product code system or similar systems, and electronic measuring systems working in conjunction with both intrastate and interstate billing systems, wholesale and retail.
- Conducts investigations of alleged or suspected violations of weights and measures statutes and regulations; prepares reports on findings and actions taken.
- Assists in compiling evidence of violations; appears in court as an expert witness in the prosecution of violators.
- Prepares reports of tests, inspections, calibrations, and investigations containing observations, findings, conclusions, recommendations, and actions taken.
Schedule: Full time (40 hours/week).
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma
- Thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college or university in the fields of Engineering, Physics or Mathematics may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
- Three (3) years of experience in servicing and repairing, testing, or calibrating weighing and measuring devices.
- Successfully completion of the Weights and Measures training program conducted by the State Office of Weights & Measures, Department of Law & Public Safety.
Other Requirements:
- Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams, Word, Outlook and Excel programs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Salary: $52,000 – 93,600 / per annum
