
Boiler Operator – Division of General Services – Department of Public Works
Organizational Overview:
The Bergen County Division of General Services is responsible for all County-owned and leased buildings (excluding all Parks Department facilities). The Division is responsible for all improvements, maintenance and repairs, along with coordinated contracted services. All emergency repairs are responded to 24 hours per day, 7-day per week, 365-day per year basis. In addition, General Services’ staff is responsible for snow removal from walkways and parking areas connected to County-owned buildings and several leased properties.
Job Description:
This employment opportunity is to serve as the Boiler Operator in the Division of General Services. Under direction, operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler; does related work as required.
Job Responsibilities (may include but not limited to):
- Fires stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam powered equipment.
- Fuels boilers by regulating automatic stokers, hand firing, and regulating the flow of oil in oil burners.
- Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
- Sees that water is maintained in the boiler at the required level.
- Maintains the fires in the boilers at the proper thickness and regulates the draft to obtain the most efficient results.
- Does the work involved in the repair, maintenance, and installation of grate units, tubes, and caps, and in turbine boilers.
- Measures and records amount of fuel used.
- Washes boiler and pump rooms and does other work to maintain the areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Makes emergency repairs and does the work required to keep the machines and equipment in good operating condition.
- Makes simple tests of boiler water to determine the amount of hardness, acidity, and alkalinity and may operate boiler water conditioning apparatus and equipment.
- Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Keeps essential records and files of the results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
- May operate and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
- Sweeps and cleans furnace rooms, keeps flues clean, picks up trash adjacent to furnace rooms and places in containers, and keeps trash compounds clean at all times.
- Reports breakage of or damage to furnaces or heaters promptly.
- Reports to the proper individual whenever the fuel supply is running low.
- Adjusts drafts, oils pumps, electric motors, and other boiler room equipment.
Schedule:
- Full time (40 hours/week)
- Swing Shift: Wednesday & Thursday 11PM – 7AM, Friday 3PM – 11PM, Saturday – Sunday 7AM – 3PM
- Occasional overtime
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma
- One (1) year of experience
Other Requirements:
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more of equipment/machinery.
- Applicants must possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
- Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey to perform essential duties of the position.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary: $38,000 – $54,600 / per annum
