Organizational Overview:
The Bergen County Golf Division oversees the management and maintenance of six county-owned golf courses, which make up ten percent of the county’s total parkland. These courses offer residents and visitors an affordable and accessible golfing experience
Job Description:
This employment opportunity is to serve as the Greens Superintendent. Under direction, directs and administers a comprehensive maintenance program for regulation golf courses; directs employees engaged in carrying out the specialized maintenance program; may develop plans for improvement of golf courses; does related work as required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Plans and supervises a variety of maintenance programs related to the proper care of the turf and land areas of golf course.
- Gives suitable assignments and instructions to assigned personnel.
- Requisitions, receives, accounts for, stores and issues materials and supplies.
- Recommends the selection of specific equipment for maintenance of golf courses.
- May attend conference related to turf management or golf course maintenance.
- Supervises and works with the supervising greenskeepers and their crews in maintaining golf courses.
- Schedules the workers so as to provide full coverage during the peak season, as well as the remainder of the year.
- May use different chemical formulas or mixtures to improve the playing surfaces and to prevent the growth of weeds.
- Diagnoses any disease, harmful insects or weed found on the turf and determines the proper treatment to remove them.
- May take soil samples and runs soil tests to determine and direct the application of the proper type and amounts of lime, fertilizers, insecticides or fungicides to be used.
- Directs the operation and repair of underground irrigation systems.
- Insures the proper care and use of assigned equipment, materials and supplies.
- Keeps needed records of personnel, equipment, materials, work done, and time spent.
- Prepares suitable reports.
- Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in constructing new areas and preserving golf course grounds.
- Plans work programs, utilizing experience and established agronomic practices, to improve and maintain turf and playing condition of course.
- Tours grounds to ascertain work progress and condition of course.
- Interviews, hires, and discharges workers.
Schedule:
- Full time (40 hours/week) with occasional overtime
- Weekends, Evenings and Holidays as needed
Education Requirements:
- Satisfactory competition of a one-year program from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in turf management, agronomy
Other Requirements:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Appointees may be required to obtain a pesticide applicator or a commercial pesticide operator issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Salary: $75,000 / per annum
