Laborer II – Division of Public Safety Education, Department of Public Safety

Organizational Overview:

The Bergen County Department of Public Safety provides safety services for the County. Included in this Department are the divisions of Safety and Security, Public Safety Communications, Consumer Affairs/Consumer Protection, Emergency Management, Medical Examiner, Bergen EMS, Public Safety Education, Weights and Measures, and Law and Public Safety Institute.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity is to serve as the Laborer II in the Division of Public Safety Education. Under direction, works with a group of laborers engaged in manual and unskilled work; does other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities (may include but not limited to):

  • Works with a group of laborers engaged in sweeping streets, in loading, lifting and moving supplies, furniture and/or equipment.
  • Loads and unloads trucks.
  • Digs trenches and does manual grading.
  • Cleans incinerators.
  • Collects rubbish and other refuse.
  • Performs janitorial functions.
  • Cleans up underbrush, foliage, vines, and weeds.
  • Cuts down trees, grass, trims hedges, water lawns, flowers, and vegetable beds.
  • Digs out stumps of trees, and dig out and destroys poisonous vines, weeds and undergrowth.
  • Shovels snow.
  • Whitewashes walls.
  • Shovels gravel and sand.
  • Mixes cement or mortar and places forms used in concrete work.
  • Performs cold patching.
  • May operate trucks, construction and/or maintenance equipment.
  • Cleans sludge beds.
  • Clean sewers.
  • Sorts, piles, and cleans salvage brick, stone, lumber and metal work.
  • Makes routine repairs to equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Prepares reports and keep records.

Schedule:   

  • Full time (40 hours/week) weekday, weekends and evenings.
  • Occasional overtime

Education Requirements: High School Diploma

Other Requirements:

  • One (1) year of experience in manual labor work.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey to perform essential duties of the position.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Salary:  $40,500 – $53,200 / per annum
