Plumber Division of General Services, Department of Public Works

Organizational Overview:

The Bergen County Division of General Services is responsible for all County-owned and –leased buildings (excluding all Parks Department facilities).  The Division is responsible for all improvements, maintenance and repairs, along with coordinated contracted services.  All emergency repairs are responded to on a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week, 365-day per year basis.  The County owns and General Services is responsible for facilities and leased properties throughout the County.  In addition, General Services’ staff is responsible for snow removal from walkways and parking areas connected to County-owned buildings and several leased properties.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity is to serve as the Plumber in the Division of General Services. Under direction performs general plumbing work involved in installation and maintenance of plumbing facilities and systems; works with various machine and hand tools common to the plumbing trade; may prepare   or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accord with the plumbing code or accepted trade

practices: takes the lead over and gives assignments to those assigned as helpers; does other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:              

  • Installs, repairs, and/or maintains gas, water, and waste disposal pipes and facilities.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions and makes emergency and permanent repairs.
  • Removes stoppages from piping and toilet, sink, and other facilities.
  • Works with wrought iron, cast iron, butt welded, soil, asbestos composition, and copper pipe.
  • Installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot compression, and soldered joints.
  • May cover piping and fittings with asbestos or other compositions.
  • Is familiar with the nomenclature, use and installation of reducing, pressure relief, surge check, float, gate, globe and other types of valves, unions, sleeves, bushings, reducers and other fittings and valves.
  • Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, and specifications and roughing-in sheets in accord with the plumbing code or approved trade practices.
  • Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings.
  • Makes time and materials estimates.
  • Gives assignments to helpers.
  • Keeps records.

Schedule:    Full time (40 hours/week).  

Education Requirements: High School Diploma

Other Requirements:

  • Three (3) years of experience in plumbing work involving a variety of layout, installation, and maintenance tasks.  NOTE:  A valid Master Plumber’s license issued by the  New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbing may be substituted for (3) three years of related experience.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.

Salary:  $58,000 – $75,600 / per annum
