Veterinarian – Health Services – Animal Services

Organizational Overview:

The Division of Animal Services is responsible for Animal Control and related services for 49 towns in Bergen and Hudson Counties. The mission of Animal Services is to promote the humane treatment of all animals, reunite lost pets with their owners, and encourage adoption, foster care, and wildlife rehabilitation. Additionally, Animal Services works to reduce animal populations through spay/neuter programs (TNR) and public education on animal welfare. We adhere to a no-kill philosophy under the guidelines of the Asilomar Accords.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity is to serve as Veterinarian.  Under the direction of Health Department administration, the Veterinarian leads the veterinary unit at the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center.  They are responsible for coordinating all veterinary care for matters associated with the Animal Shelter and Animal Control and oversees and coordinates the efforts of the veterinary staff.  They may also be asked to provide guidance or advice on animal-related matters as requested by County administration. 

Job Responsibilities:          

  • Supervise State mandated disease control program with a solid understanding of “herd health” and having the ability to review and update standard operating procedures.
  • Complete intake exams, daily rounds, diagnose and provide treatment plans for shelter animals.
  • Ability to perform high volume spay/neuter procedures, dentals/extractions, enucleations, mass removals and/or other procedures as needed.
  • Support and promote TNR program to the shelter community.
  • Oversee the secure use of and record keeping for controlled substances in accordance with DEA, State and Federal regulations.
  • Must be highly organized, detail oriented with the ability to prioritize using sound judgement while working in a sensitive, emotionally charged environment.
  • Coordinate free and low-cost public vaccine clinics.

Schedule:   

  • Full time (40 hours/week)
  • Monday – Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

License and Other Requirements:

  • Possession of a current, valid license as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine issued by the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
  • Must possess a DEA license to prescribe veterinary medications
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Salary: $165,000 – 185,000 / per annum
