Bergen250 Presents: Bergen County Revolutionary War Roundtable: Pillage, Plunder, and Arson in 1780 in Bergen County: Material Culture of the Inhabitants
Location: First Floor Multipurpose Room, One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, NJ
Time: 7:00pm
Description: On March 23 and again on April 16 of 1780 British and Hessian forces invaded Bergen County. They wrecked damage, stole valuable goods, and burned and destroyed several homes. In 1782 the State of New Jersey asked those who had damages during the Revolution to report them to the State. The citizens were never reimbursed, but the claims survive and give us an intimate look at the material culture, clothing, furniture, containers, etc., that comprised the Bergen County home. What was worth stealing? What was lost when an entire home was destroyed Peggy W. Norris is a retired reference librarian and local historian and a member of the American Quilt Study Group, the Bergen County Historical Society, and other local historical societies.
