Childhood Lead Program
The Bergen County Department of Health Services, Office of Environmental Health,Childhood Lead Program (CLP) is tasked to implement New Jersey Childhood Leadregulations found at N.J.A.C. 8:51A as amended.
Our Goals
The goal of the BCDHS CLP Program is to identify all children under 6 years of age who have elevated levels of lead in their blood.
We educate families about the effects of elevated blood lead levels and provide prevention materials.
Educational materials include: education on nutrition, hand-washing, housekeeping, and other ways to reduce lead exposure and to ensure Healthy Homes.
What We Do
When a child, up to 72 months age or older is determined to have a confirmed elevated blood lead level, this triggers action for an Environmental Intervention and Case Management plan for the affected child.
Environmental intervention/Full Hazard Assessments help to eliminate and identify lead hazards such as: lead paint, contaminated soil, ambient sources, and contaminated dust as part of protecting children in their primary/secondary residences, as well as relocation residences.
Services Provided by Case Managers
- Guidance on home safety.
- Assist in identifying possible peeling/ chipping lead paint sources.
- Home visits that include education.
- Educate proper housekeeping and hand-washing techniques that will reduce lead dust exposure.
- Identify possible cultural and consumer products within the home that may be contributing to lead exposure.
- Nutritional assessments and education on proper nutrition that decreases absorption of lead in the body.

Uninsured and Under-insured
A blood test is the only way to find out if your child has been affected by lead. A blood lead screening test can be performed by a simple finger-stick and if results are high a venous blood test should follow. Your child’s pediatrician can provide more information.
Every child should be tested at 12 and at 24 months of age. Children ages 3 to 6 years old who have never been tested should also be tested.
